It has been shown to have strong inhibitory properties against trifluoroacetic acid, which is an acidic electrophile. TBPC also has kinetic and thermodynamic properties that are consistent with its role as a proton donor. This compound is synthesized by reacting piperidine with chloroform in the presence of a catalyst such as acetic acid, forming a chiral product. The enantiomeric purity can be controlled by using either racemic or optically pure reactants.
